It’s time to reevaluate the makeup and skincare products you’re using this winter.

Every season brings a slightly different beauty challenge. In the summer, you must be strategic with formulas that can hold up against sweat and high heat. But in the winter, our skin might have different needs. From icy winds and dry indoor heat to sporadic rain showers and knitwear that’s whipped on and off all day, the formulas you usually rely on might not wear quite the same in winter. The key is not a complete overhaul (let’s be realistic here), but a few small, strategic swaps – from gentler cleansers and hydrating layers to richer creams, creamier colour and longer-wear formulas that feel better suited to the colder months.

Layer hydration

Excellent makeup starts with excellent skin prep – and in winter, hydration is the step that can make all the difference. When skin feels dry or tight, base products can be more likely to cling, settle or look less seamless, so layering nourishing products before makeup can help create a softer, smoother-looking finish.

Inspired by K-beauty routines, this is all about applying lightweight hydration first, then sealing it in with richer textures. Think milky toners, facial mists and light serums, followed by a moisturiser that leaves skin feeling comfortable and nourished. The goal is fresh, bouncy-looking, luminous skin that feels prepped and ready for the rest of your routine.

Build a base that works with winter skin

Once your skin is prepped, it’s worth thinking about the way your base is sitting, blending and wearing throughout the day. In winter, complexion products can call for a lighter approach – less matte, less powder-heavy and more focused on comfort, glow and flexibility.

Start with a primer that suits the finish you want, whether that’s smoothing, hydrating or subtly luminous. From there, build coverage where you want it most. A skin tint can keep things fresh and even, a creamy concealer can help even out problem areas, while a foundation with a natural or radiant-looking finish can give a more polished result without feeling too flat.

Bring colour back with cream formulas

Come midwinter, when your complexion can start to look a little lacklustre and the colour feels like it has all but drained from your face, cream formulas are an easy way to buff the warmth and dimension back in.

Rather than relying on powder-heavy layers, opt for cream blush, bronzer, or highlighter sticks that melt easily into the skin for a softer, more diffused finish.

Rethink how you set your makeup

To finish your base, set strategically. A light touch of powder through areas like the T-zone or under the eyes can help keep makeup in place, while a setting spray can soften the overall finish and bring the base back to life.

Try the low-maintenance lip update

Hot coffees, hot lunches and indoor heat blasting – lips, unfortunately tend to bear the brunt of winter. Before reaching for pigment, start by smoothing any flaky texture with a gentle lip scrub, then follow with a balm, mask or treatment to leave lips feeling cushioned and nourished.

From there, look to colour that feels effortless rather than high-maintenance. Lip stains, tints and balmy washes of colour can give lips that just-bitten finish without the constant mirror checks.

Wear a tint on its own for a soft wash of colour, or layer a balm or gloss over the top for a fresher, juicier finish.

Eye makeup that goes the distance

Long-wearing eye makeup might usually be associated with heat, humidity and sweat, but winter can test your eye look in its own way. Teary eyes, days staring at screens and unexpected weather when you’re popping out for lunch can all make smudging, creasing or flaking more likely – which is why longer-wear formulas can be just as useful in the colder months.
