Kenalog in Orabase® is a treatment for mouth ulcers which provides rapid relief from the soreness and pain, reduces swelling and accelerates the healing process. It is a thick, sticky paste that contains a corticosteroid called triamcinolone acetonide. The paste holds the corticosteroid in place to create a protective barrier over the top of the mouth ulcer to help prevent further irritation or injury.

What to do if you have a mouth ulcer

The aim of any treatment is to relieve pain or discomfort and to help your mouth ulcer heal. Treatments may include:

  • Pain-relieving mouthwashes, sprays or gels to help reduce the pain in the area directly around your ulcer. These usually only work for a short time.
  • Medicated antiseptic mouthwashes such as those containing chlorhexidine gluconate reduce the build up of bacteria in your mouth and help prevent your ulcer becoming infected.
  • Steroid-containing protective pastes, such as Kenalog in Orabase®?, provide rapid pain relief by reducing the inflammation associated with ulcers. The paste also forms a protective film over the ulcer, protecting it from further irritation and damage, providing an environment for accelerated healing.

    Dab a small amount of paste (about 1cm) onto the affected area. Use enough to coat the area with a thin film.

    Simple steps to apply KENALOG IN ORABASE:
    1. Dab a small amount of paste (about 6mm) onto the affected area. Use enough to coat the area with a thin film.
    2. Do not rub the paste in or try to spread the paste (this may cause a gritty feeling in your mouth and cause the paste to crumble).
    3. Once the paste is applied correctly, a smooth, slippery film will develop.

    For best results apply a coating of KENALOG IN ORABASE:
    - 2- 3 times a day (depending on how painful your symptoms are)
    - Preferably after meals
    - Before bedtime so the medicine can work throughout the night
    - Until all your symptoms have resolved.

    Do not use if:
    - You are pregnant or intend to become pregnant while using the product, unless advised otherwise by your doctor or dentist.
    - You are sensitive to triamcinolone acetonide or any of the other ingredients in KENALOG IN ORABASE (which include gelatin, pectin, carmellose sodium and plastibase 50W).
    - You have an infection in your mouth or throat or if you have tuberculosis, stomach ulcers or diabetes - unless you have discussed its use with your doctor first.
