This prescription item requires a pre approved authority from the Government in order to get this item at the quoted price. Authority prescriptions need to be applied for by the doctor writing the script and can include reasons such as increased quantities due to dosage, increased repeats, use for a pre determined specified use, or the nature of the medication itself requiring specialist interaction. In the event that an authority is not granted on the script, the price will revert to the private price quoted for that item

This item contains more than one pack of a prescription product. Before this can be dispensed the doctor has to give approval. The prescription must be written for the total quantity or the prescription must be endorsed by your doctor "Regulation 24" otherwise we will be unable to dispense the increased amount. If you proceed with the order without approval, we will only send out one pack at the single pack price and refund the difference. Eg If your prescription is written out for 30 Tablets with 5 repeats and it does not have “Regulation 24 “ written on the script, the ONLY quantity we can dispense is 30 at one time. Further dispensing of this product could only occur after an appropriate length of time - usually 21 days but depends on dosage. In this example if you would like to obtain 180 Tablets then the doctor must endorse the prescription “Regulation 24” or the quantity must be written out for 180 and not 30. NB Conditions apply on the writing of a Regulation 24 prescription. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for details.

We can no longer accept signed authority forms from your doctor as permission to dispense more than one pack. Please contact our pharmacist for more information.

If you order this item as Private, NO PBS stickers will be issued. Once any prescription order has been sent the product cannot be returned for a refund even if your doctor changes your medication or you have an adverse reaction.

General Information

Consumer Medicine Information

What is in this leaflet?
This leaflet answers some common questions about CILICAINE.

It does not contain all the available information.

It does not take place of talking to your doctor or pharmacist.

All medicines have risks and benefits.

Your doctor has weighed the risks of using CILICAINE against the benefits this medicine is expected to have for you.

If you have any concerns about this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Keep this leaflet with your medicine. You may need to read it again.

The name of your medicine is CILICAINE syringe injection.

CILICAINE is a type of antibiotic and belongs to the group of medicines called penicillins.

CILICAINE contains a penicillin, as an active ingredient, which is called Procaine Penicillin.

CILICAINE syringe injection is available as a 1.5 gram disposable syringe with sterile swabs.

What is CILICAINE used for?
CILICAINE is used to treat infections in different parts of the body caused by bacteria.

CILICAINE works by killing the bacteria that are causing the infection.

CILICAINE will not work against infections caused by viruses such as colds or the flu.

Your doctor however, may have prescribed and used CILICAINE for another purpose.

Ask your doctor if you have any questions about why CILICAINE has been prescribed for you.

A doctor's prescription is required for CILICAINE.

Before you are given CILICAINE
When you must not be given it
Do not use CILICAINE if you have ever had an allergic reaction to:

1.CILICAINE syringe injection or any other penicillin.
2.Any of the other ingredients in CILICAINE listed at the end of this leaflet.
You must tell your doctor if:

You have had an allergic reaction to cephalosporins. You may have an increased chance of being allergic to CILICAINE if you are allergic to cephalosporins.

Some of the symptoms of an allergic reaction may include skin rash and itching. Other reactions may include nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Tell your doctor if you have suffered from any of the allergic conditions in the past due to the use of penicillin.

You must also tell your doctor if:

1.You are allergic to any other medicines, foods, dyes or preservatives.
2.You are pregnant or intend to become pregnant.
3.You are breast-feeding or plan to breast feed.
Like most medicines, CILICAINE is not recommended in pregnancy and during breast-feeding. Your doctor will discuss the possible risks and benefits of using CILICAINE during pregnancy and breast-feeding.

When you must not be given Cilicaine:
1.If the packaging shows sign of tampering or the seal is broken.
2.After the expiry date printed on the pack has passed.
The medication may have no effect at all, or worse, it may give an entirely unexpected effect if you use it after the expiry date.

Taking other medicines
Tell your doctor (or pharmacist) if you are taking any other medicines including probenecid, a medicine used to treat gout. This includes any that you buy without a prescription from a pharmacy, supermarket or health food shop.

Some medicines may affect the way others work. Your doctor or pharmacist can tell you what to do when CILICAINE is given with other medicines.

Talk to your doctor about the need for an additional method of contraception while on a course of Cilicaine. Some antibiotics may decrease the effectiveness of some birth control pills, although this has not been shown with Cilicaine.

How CILICAINE syringe injection is given
Cilicaine is given as a deep injection into a large muscle.

Cilicaine must only be given by a doctor or nurse.

Your doctor will decide what dose and how you will receive Cilicaine. This depends on your infection and other factors, such as your weight. For most infections, Cilicaine is usually given as a single dose daily for two to five days. Sometimes only a single dose of Cilicaine is required for the treatment and prevention of certain infections.

Your doctor will decide how long you will need to use Cilicaine. This may differ from the usual dose shown in this leaflet.

How much to inject?
The usual dose is:

Adults: 1.5 g daily for two to five days.

For the treatment of Gonorrhoea or Syphilis a dose of 1 g daily for 7 to 14 days or up to 4.8 g as a single session treatment usually administered with probenecid.

Children: 1/4 or 1/2 adult dose is usually sufficient for under 3 or over 3 years, respectively.

How long to use it
Your doctor will tell you how long the course of CILICAINE will last.

The whole course of CILICAINE must be given. Do not cease CILICAINE even if you feel better. Your infection and symptoms may return.

If you forget to take it
If you forget to go for CILICAINE administration, go to your doctor as soon as you remember and then go back to your normal visits.

Telephone your doctor or Poisons Information Centre (phone 13 11 26) if you think that you or anyone else may have been given too much CILICAINE. Do this even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning. Keep the telephone numbers of these places handy.

While you are using CILICAINE
Things you must do
If your symptoms do not improve within a few days, or if they become worse, tell your doctor.

If you or your children develop any form of skin rash and/or itching or difficulty in breathing while using CILICAINE. Contact your doctor immediately.

If you develop severe diarrhoea tell your doctor immediately. Consult your pharmacist or nurse in absence of your doctor. Do this even if it occurs several weeks after you have stopped using CILICAINE.

If you become pregnant while you are using CILICAINE tell your doctor.

If you have to get any blood or urine tests done tell your doctor and nurse that you are using CILICAINE.

Tell all your doctor(s), dentist and pharmacist(s) who are treating you that you are on a course of CILICAINE.

Tell your doctor if you feel that CILICAINE is not helping your condition.

Tell your doctor if, for any reason, CILICAINE has not been used exactly as prescribed. Otherwise, your doctor may think that it was not effective and change your treatment unnecessarily.

Things you must not do
Do not cease your CILICAINE course until it is finished, even if you feel better. Your infection and symptoms may not clear completely and it may return.

Do not administer CILICAINE to anyone else even if his or her symptoms seem similar to yours.

Do not use CILICAINE to treat other conditions unless your doctor tells you. Your doctor has prescribed CILICAINE especially for you and your condition. If you use it for another condition, it may not work or make the condition worse.

Things to be careful of
Tell your doctor if you get vaginal itching or discharge, sore mouth or tongue. This is due to a fungal infection called Thrush. Sometimes use of this medicine allows fungi to grow, as CILICAINE is ineffective against fungi.

If you get diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, tell your doctor.

Take care while driving or operating machinery until you know how CILICAINE affects you. CILICAINE generally does not affect your ability to drive a car or operate machinery. However, as with many other medicines, CILICAINE may also cause dizziness, drowsiness and/or tiredness in some people.

Side Effects or Adverse Reactions
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you do not feel well while you are using CILICAINE. CILICAINE helps most people with infections but it may have some unwanted side effects in a few people.

Side effects reported by some people using CILICAINE include:

nausea & vomiting
skin rash
difficulty in breathing
CILICAINE may cause other side effects. If you have any other side effects, check with your doctor.

Do not be alarmed by this list of possible side effects. You may not experience any of them.

While using CILICAINE
Keep CILICAINE syringe injection where young children cannot reach it. A locked cupboard at least one-and-a-half metres above the ground is a good place to store medicines.

Store CILICAINE syringe injection in a refrigerator between 2 - 8 degree C. DO NOT FREEZE.

Do not leave CILICAINE syringe injection in the car or on windowsills. Heat can destroy some medicines.

If your doctor tells you to stop using CILICAINE or it has passed its expiry date, ask your pharmacist what to do with any CILICAINE syringe left over.

Further Information
This is not all the information that is available on CILICAINE. If you need more information, ask a doctor or pharmacist.
